Chandler, OK – Interpretive center in Chandler marks Route 66
CHANDLER, Okla. (AP) A former National Guard armory built during the Great Depression is now an interpretive center in Chandler that marks the path of former Route 66.
The structure was built by the WPA in 1937 and was abandoned by the National Guard when a new armory was built in the 1970s.
Oklahoma City television station KWTV reports that a proposal to turn the structure down resulted in a preservation effort, and the center now tells the story of Route 66 and Chandler's military history.
U.S. Route 66 was the mid-20th century national highway from the northeast to the west, running through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.
