Tulsa, Oklahoma – On our program today, we hear from the Holocaust survivor and scholar Dr. Nechama Tec. She'll be the keynote speaker at the annual Yom Hashoah Interfaith Holocaust Commemoration set for 7 p.m. tomorrow night (4/23/2009) at Congregation B'nai Emunah here in Tulsa. The event is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Tulsa; it's free to the public. Dr. Tec is the author of several books, among them "Defiance: The Bielski Partisans," which served as the basis for the recent film "Defiance" that stars Daniel Craig. The theme of this year's Yom Hashoah Interfaith Holocaust Commemoration is "We Dare to Resist" --- and, as we discover on today's show, Dr. Tec has devoted her life to studying and documenting the many European Jews whose acts of resistance and defiance --- and, indeed, of compassion, altruism, and heroism --- directly confronted the nightmarish horror and despair wrought by the Nazis.
