Tulsa, Oklahoma – On our show today, we hear from the gifted writer Eddie Chuculate, a Creek and Cherokee Indian from Muskogee, Oklahoma. Chuculate has won a PEN / O. Henry prize as well as a Pushcart citation for his short fiction, and he recently held a Wallace Stegner creative writing fellowship at Stanford University. Chuculate's first book, a story collection called "Cheyenne Madonna," has just been published. About this book, the noted author Ursula K. Le Guin has written: "Every sentence is unexpected, yet infallible.... The calm, beautiful, unexplaining accuracy of description carries us right through the madness of the final adventure." And Joy Harjo concurs: "With [this book], Eddie Chuculate emerges as an important new talent in his generation of storytellers. He's a kind of journalist of the soul as he investigates the broken-hearted nation of Indian men." Chuculate will be doing a reading/signing of this book --- as a Book Smart Tulsa event --- on Saturday the 31st at 7pm at the Hotel Ambassador in Tulsa.
