A Free Lecture Here at TU -- "Food & Power: How Corporations Shape What We Eat and Drink"

Aired on Thursday, September 22nd.

On this edition of StudioTulsa, we speak with Philip Howard, a professor of community sustainability at Michigan State University. He's also president of the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society, and is a member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems. His new book, released earlier this year, is "Concentration and Power in the Food System: Who Controls What We Eat?" -- and, working from ideas set forth in this book, he'll give a free-to-the-public address here at TU tonight, Thursday the 22nd, beginning at 7pm. This talk -- called "Food & Power: How Corporations Shape What We Eat and Drink" -- is presented by TU's Oklahoma Center for the Humanities; it happens in Tyrrell Hall on the TU campus. As we learn on today's show, using the examples of beer, soytmilk, and bagged salads, Professor Howard's lecture will explain how and why big corporations increasingly shape what Americans eat.

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
