This weekend -- just in time for Valentine's Day -- Tulsa Opera will offer two performances of Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette." This classic opera will be staged on Friday the 13th at 7:30pm and Sunday the 15th at 2:30pm, with both productions happening at the Tulsa PAC. As is noted of this work at the Tulsa Opera website: "Shakespeare's classic tale of young love has enjoyed countless interpretations, but none more beautiful than Gounod's sumptuous 'Roméo et Juliette.' The story of ill-fated lovers from Verona's rival Montague and Capulet clans comes to life through a series of stunning duets, swashbuckling sword fights, and Juliet's beautiful aria, 'Je veux vivre.' [This staging of] 'Romeo and Juliet' marks the return of Tulsa's favorite soprano, opera star Sarah Coburn, in the role of Juliet, and Daniel Montenegro makes a much-anticipated debut as Romeo. Stage director Crystal Manich makes her Tulsa Opera debut." Our guest on today's ST tells us all about this production: Kostis Protopapas has been the artistic director of Tulsa Opera since 2008.
