The FBI is handling the investigation into missing money from the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System. All total $ 4.2 million are missing from the fund. It appears hackers took the money.
The fund says benefits to retirees will not be affected by the embezzlement and that payments will continue as scheduled.
The FBI has already recovered some of the money. They are optimistic that forensic investigators can trace and recover the rest of the cash.
The Retirement System issued the following statement on its website:
OLERS was recently a victim of a cyber-crime where $4.2M was illegally stolen. We notified the FBI who is conducting an active investigation of the crime. Because of the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on the details. However, we are certain the stolen funds will be recovered. Most importantly, no pension benefits to members or beneficiaries have been impacted or put at risk. All benefits will continue to be paid in a timely fashion as always.
