Here's Dr. Martin Luther King, in 1964: "Jazz speaks for life. The blues tell the story of life's difficulties, and if you think for a moment, you will realize that they take the hardest realities of life and put them into music, only to come out with some new hope or sense of triumph. This is triumphant music."
Amen to that -- and on the next All This Jazz, we'll celebrate such triumph. In a show that starts at 9pm on Saturday the 4th, right here on KWGS, our thematic hour (running from 11pm till midnight) will be Black History Month. We'll thus hear excellent jazz tracks from the likes of Duke Ellington, Max Roach, Nina Simone, and several others -- all of them honoring, documenting, and advancing the African-American spirit through the decades.
Every Saturday night, both online and over the air, ATJ delivers three hours of recent and classic jazz -- across a wide range of styles -- from 9 o'clock till midnight.
From Don Cherry to Don Byron, Paul Motian to Paul Desmond, and Kenny Wheeler to Kenny Barron, All This Jazz is delighted by modern (and post-modern!) jazz in its many forms, and we dig sharing the same with our listeners.
