The Past, Present, and Future of Reform Judaism: A Conversation with Rabbi Daniel Freelander

By Rich Fisher

Tulsa, Oklahoma – On today's show, we speak by phone with Rabbi Daniel Freelander, Senior VP and Chief Operating Officer of the Union for Reform Judaism. He'll be the keynote speaker for Temple Israel's 95th anniversary celebration (which happens on Friday the 4th; at Temple Israel here in Tulsa). Interestingly, Rabbi Freelander relates recent (and ongoing) changes in Reform Judaism more to the major changes happening in the American Protestant and Catholic churches than to the development of European Judaism. Moreover, Rabbi Freelander is a passionate proponent of Jewish education, has been an editor at "Reform Judaism" magazine, and remains an accomplished composer and musical performer. He co-wrote "Shalom Rav" --- a long-beloved musical blessing in the Reform Jewish tradition --- and you can actually see him performing this song on YouTube. (He's the one on the left, circa 1974, at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fsSLmdz8bI.)
