Sights and Sounds of the 2014 Oklahoma Music Educators Association Conference

Here’s an impressionistic sound portrait of wandering through the workshops, exhibit halls, and performances of the 2014 Oklahoma Music Educators Association Conference. This recording was made by Classical 88.7 KWTU on January 16 and 17 at the downtown Tulsa Assembly Center. Heard (in order) are highlights of:

  • The voices of Oklahoma music teachers sight-reading music in Choral Session #3: Give My Regards! The Music of Broadway, with Mac Huff, clinician
  • Rod Ackmann, conductor, introducing the Sooner Bassooners Assembly Hall Foyer Concert
  • The University of Oklahoma Symphonic Band, featured at the workshop’s opening session
  • The OKMEA All-State Children’s Concert at the general session
  • The Tulsa Symphony String Quartet at the Doubletree Foyer Concert
  • Peter Markes, OKMEA Teacher of the Year, singing his own composition “What Is Success”, accompanied by the Society of Strings
  • Sounds of the exhibit hall: Bob Syburg with Eastman Instruments describing how beginning orchestra instruments are made
  • The Society of Strings, an Oklahoma City community orchestra led by conductor John Schimek
  • The Tulsa Community Band, conducted by Ted Bachmann, Charles Surine, and Martha Kramer
