'The Office' is getting a spinoff — more than 10 years after the NBC series ended

(SOUNDBITE OF THE OFFICE BAND'S "THE OFFICE (MAIN THEME)")

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Good morning, I'm Steve Inskeep. The television show "The Office" gets a spin-off more than 10 years after the NBC series wrapped up. It'll take place in the same universe with the same mocumentary crew that brought Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch into our homes. There are new characters, though, and a new setting, a dying historic Midwestern newspaper. What could be more hilarious than journalists chasing readers? Production starts this summer.

It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
