Tahlequah, OK – Smith, Baker each make loans to stay in chief race

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The candidates for principal chief of the Cherokee have each had to borrow to keep their campaigns afloat.

The Tulsa World reported Sunday that incumbent Chief Chad Smith took out bank loans totaling $40,000.

Challenger Bill John Baker has used a large part of his life savings to loan his campaign $150,000.

Baker has reported $289,695 in contributions. Smith reports $388,640 in campaign donations.

The Cherokee Nation votes Sept. 24.
