Update: Tulsa Metro Chamber urges 'Yes' on AA contract

Union leaders may not be willing to say whether members should vote the new American Airlines contract up or down, but area officials certainly are.

The Tulsa Metro Chamber in a news conference today urged union members to vote yes.

"It's important that we support the contract that saves and retains the greatest number of jobs," said Mike Neal, President and CEO of the Tulsa Metro Chamber.

Many area mayors and chambers of commerce joined in calling for the yes vote.

Owasso would be one of the hardest hit areas, since many American Airlines employees live there. Gary Akin, President of the Owasso Chamber of Commerce, warned that either way would be a difficult road.

"If they vote no, it's a change. If they vote yes, it will reduce the number of projected job losses, and yet they still have to adapt to change," he said. "We understand that, and we respect it very much. But we'd rather have change that will maintain as many quality jobs as we can have in Tulsa and our region."

"It's extremely important to the economic stability of our region and the growth in the future," he added.
