Federal Fugitive for 41 Years Dies in Texas

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — Authorities say a man who escaped from federal prison in Oklahoma 41 years ago has died in Texas.

The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office began looking into the identity of the man after responding along with paramedics Tuesday to a 911 call about an unconscious person at a home in the Grape Creek community just outside of San Angelo.

Lieutenant Christina Lopez says a deputy investigating the unattended death discovered through fingerprints that the man who had been identified as 62-year-old Charles Johnson was actually Robert Leroy Parker, who escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution in El Reno, Oklahoma on July 11th, 1972 while serving time for violating probation of a mail theft sentence.

Lopez says the man had lived in the San Angelo, Texas area since 2002.
