Activist Group Urges Breakup for OG&E and Coal

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A group of environmental activists is spending this Valentine's Day advocating for a breakup.

Members of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign are delivering petitions on Friday to the downtown Oklahoma City headquarters of Oklahoma Gas & Electric and asking the state's largest electric utility to "break up with coal."

The group wants OG&E to shut down its two coal-fired energy plants and commit to cleaner alternatives.

OG&E spokeswoman Kathleen O'Shea says she plans to meet with the activists and accept their petition.

O'Shea says more than 10 percent of the company's generation already comes from wind, and that OG&E believes fuel diversity is the best way to provide reliable and affordable electricity to its customers.
