Can I Swing an "Amen"? (On the Next All This Jazz: Hymns and Spirituals)

Next time on All This Jazz --- to borrow a phrase from the fantastic soul-jazz guitarist Grant Green (and specifically, from the classic Blue Note LP shown here) --- we'll be "Feelin' the Spirit." Please tune in for the forthcoming edition of our show, which begins at 10pm on Saturday the 30th here on Public Radio 89.5-1.

Passover began at sundown last Monday, and Easter arrives on Sunday, and thus the second-hour theme of our next ATJ will be "Hymns and Spirituals." We'll hear jazz-infused renditions of such familiar themes as "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," and "We Shall Overcome." We'll also hear a wonderful take on "Spiritual," the John Coltrane composition, from the pianist Steve Kuhn (who actually played in Trane's band for a brief spell). Plus, speaking of soulful jazz of the first order, we'll dig a tasty track from a 2010 CD by the Charles Lloyd Quartet; Lloyd, the legendary saxophonist, turned 75 earlier this month, as was noted in this fine piece that aired a couple of weeks ago on All Things Considered.

As ever, our show will offer two solid hours of modern jazz, both recent and classic. (And likewise as ever, there's a re-broadcast of ATJ scheduled for 7pm on Sunday night, the 31st, on Jazz 89.5-2, our all-jazz HD Radio channel.)

Join us.

Scott Gregory started working at Public Radio Tulsa in 2006; he started listening to public radio circa 1980, when he and NPR both marked their tenth birthdays (although only one of them commemorated the occasion with a party at Skate World). Scott became this radio station's Operations Director in the summer of 2023; he also hosts and programs All This Jazz, which airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5-1 from 9pm till midnight.
