Oklahoma City, OK – Computer system targets uninsured drivers
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Uninsured motorists might soon find it more difficult to elude Oklahoma state troopers.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol could be using the state's electronic insurance verification system in time for the Memorial Day weekend travel rush.
Troopers already use a computer system at each traffic stop to check whether a vehicle is properly licensed and is not stolen. The new system created by a state law passed in 2006 brings insurance verification to a trooper's fingertips, too.
The system will be able to instantly verify whether a driver is insured, but only on personal Oklahoma vehicles. Commercial vehicles and vehicles licensed in other states are not in the system.
About one-fourth of the 3.3 million vehicles in Oklahoma are believed to be uninsured.
