Hope you can catch the next installment of All This Jazz, beginning at 10pm on Saturday the 4th, right here on Public Radio 89.5 KWGS-FM -- and online, via live stream, at PublicRadioTulsa.org. As ever, we'll present two solid hours of modern jazz, both recent and classic, across a range of styles.
And one Thelonious Sphere Monk -- born October 10, 1917, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina -- will be the focal point for our theme-driven second hour of the program. (Monk would have turned 97 come Friday the 10th; he died in 1982.) That Monk -- "the high priest of bebop," as they used to tag him -- is today one of the most performed (and most recorded, and most revered) composers in jazz history is common knowledge among those who know and cherish this music, and so we'll spotlight his compositions exclusively -- in honor of his upcoming b'day -- in the latter half of All This Jazz (which starts at 11pm).
We'll hear a variety of jazz greats doing immortal Monk themes like "Round Midnight" and "Well, You Needn't" as well as less familiar but likewise wonderful tunes along the lines of "Let's Cool One" and "Boo Boo's Birthday."
And in the first hour of our show, we'll hear from Clark Terry, Shirley Scott, Gary Burton, and more.
It'll be fun. And it'll swing like a gate. And it'll doubtlessly make you feel like a million (before taxes, even).
