It's a Gala Opening Concert for the New SFJAZZ Center; Hear It LIVE Tonight on Jazz 89.5-2

SFJAZZ is a well-respected West Coast nonprofit institution that's been around for some three decades now. The organization is committed to jazz education, and to the promotion and preservation of the music and its repertoire; it's also the origin of the annual San Francisco Jazz Festival. (In fact, SFJAZZ presents about a hundred concerts each year.) And it has one heck of a "house band," so to speak --- the SFJAZZ Collective, on ongoing combo with revolving personnel that tours and records regularly, features the likes of David Sánchez, Avishai Cohen, Stefon Harris, Miguel Zenón, and Robin Eubanks in its current line-up.

Tonight, that house band will finally play a show in its own home. The newly opened, long-overdue SFJAZZ Center held a grand-opening ceremony on Monday, and tonight (Wednesday the 23rd) it will present an all-star opening concert. This event will feature the SFJAZZ Collective as well as several special guests, among them McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Joshua Redman, Bobby Hutcherson, and Esperanza Spalding. (Bill Cosby is to be the MC.)

You can hear this concert live, and in full, beginning at 10pm local time, on Jazz 89.5-2, which is our excellent all-jazz HD Radio channel here at Public Radio Tulsa.

Also, you can read a nice profile of the new SFJAZZ Center facility (as crafted by Patrick Jarenwattananon, a jazz writer/critic with NPR Music) here. And you can even watch a free and live video stream of tonight's concert at this link.

Whether online or via HD Radio, it'll be worth checking out, absolutely, fellow jazz lovers!

Scott Gregory started working at Public Radio Tulsa in 2006; he started listening to public radio circa 1980, when he and NPR both marked their tenth birthdays (although only one of them commemorated the occasion with a party at Skate World). Scott became this radio station's Operations Director in the summer of 2023; he also hosts and programs All This Jazz, which airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5-1 from 9pm till midnight.
