Oklahoma City, OK – Boaters, travelers hit the road across Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers are stepping up enforcement on state lakes, rivers and highways on Saturday as the Memorial Day weekend gets under way.

OHP Lt. George Brown says extra troopers are being stationed at several lakes popular with boaters and campers and the Illinois River in northeast Oklahoma.

At least two fatality crashes have been reported today by the highway patrol.

But for the year, the patrol reports the total number of traffic-related deaths on Oklahoma roadways in 2009 stood at 230, down more than 30 from the same time in 2008.

Despite heavy rainfall in recent months, all of the state lakes were open for Memorial Day weekend, although some campsites and boat ramps were closed at Lake Tenkiller, Fort Gibson Lake, Lake Keystone and Broken Bow Lake.
