Man Holding Knife Dies in Police Shooting in Eastern Oklahoma

SALLISAW, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says a 27-year-old man has died after he approached police officers in eastern Oklahoma with a knife and they shot him.

Authorities say Shawn Taylor Watie of Stillwell died Thursday after the shooting in Sallisaw, about 95 miles southeast of Tulsa.

Investigators say the Sallisaw Police Department received a call at 9:07 a.m. about a suspicious person walking along a highway. Police say officers made contact with Watie, who came after the officers with a knife. Officers then shot Watie.

Watie was taken to a local hospital, where he died. The OSBI says the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.

The officers were not identified and have been placed on paid administrative leave.
