New Oklahoma COVID Cases at Typical Low to Start the Week; 4 More Dead

The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported on Monday 357 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state's total to 53,522.

The state has added fewer than 400 cases each Monday in August so far. New case totals are typically lower on Mondays, as reporting slows over the weekend.

Tulsa County had 79 of Monday's cases, bringing its total to 12,391. Oklahoma County continues to lead the state with 12,651 cases.

The state health department reported four deaths Monday, with none in the past 24 hours. An adult 65 or older was reported dead in Oklahoma, Rogers and Sequoyah counties. In Tulsa County, a woman between 50 and 64 years old was reported dead.

COVID-19 has now officially killed 730 Oklahomans since March 18. Oklahoma County leads the state with 144 dead. Tulsa County has the second-most deaths, 126.

The state's seven-day average of new cases, which shows the trend in infections, dropped from 689 to 687. It has held relatively steady since Friday and has stayed below 700 since Aug. 12.

The seven-day average hit a peak of 1,093 on Aug. 1. When Oklahoma moved to phase three of Gov. Kevin Stitt's reopening plan on June 1, the average was 69 cases.

Tulsa County's seven-day average of new cases rose from 134 to 135. It peaked at 254 on July 30.

As of Friday evening, 578 Oklahomans were hospitalized for COVID-19, 16 more than on Thursday. Of those hospitalized Friday, 463 had positive coronavirus tests. Overall, 237 Oklahomans hospitalized for COVID-19 were in intensive care units, nine fewer than on Thursday.

Tulsa County reported 215 residents hospitalized as of Friday, a new high. Local hospitalization numbers change frequently based on new data. Tulsa County hospitalizations have been trending up overall since the first week of June.

Over the course of the pandemic, 4,431 Oklahomans have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

As of Sunday, the state reported 20% of its adult ICU beds available.

The state health department reported an additional 251 patients as recovered on Monday, bringing the total to 44,660. Patients are considered to have recovered if they did not die, are not currently hospitalized and it has been at least 14 days since their symptoms began. Symptoms have been reported to linger for several weeks for some individuals.

The state has 8,132 active cases of COVID-19, 102 more than the day before. The state broke 8,000 active cases for the first time on Sunday.

Tulsa County reported an additional 30 patients as recovered on Monday, bringing the total to 10,776. The county has 1,489 active cases, 48 more than the day before.

The state's overall positive test rate on Friday rose 0.1 percentage points to 7.4%. Out of 11,169 tests reported on Friday, 8.8% were positive. Each positive test does not necessarily represent a unique individual.

The World Health Organization's benchmark indicating adequate testing is a 5% positive test rate.
