On the Next All This Jazz: Remembering Roy Hargrove (1969-2018)

Catch the next All This Jazz, starting at 9pm on Saturday the 10th, right here on KWGS / Public Radio Tulsa.

Every Saturday night, both online and over the air, ATJ delivers three hours of recent and classic jazz, across a wide range of styles, from 9 o'clock till midnight. From John Coltrane to John Zorn, Chris Connor to Kris Davis, Bill Holman to Bill Frisell, Art Farmer to Art Blakey, and Gerry Mulligan to Geri Allen, All This Jazz is delighted by modern (and post-modern!) jazz in its many forms, and we love sharing the same with our listeners.

Our forthcoming broadcast will feature a special spotlight, running from 11pm to midnight, on the music of the late Roy Hargrove, who died recently at age 49. As noted by NPR Music, Hargrove was “an incisive trumpeter who embodied the brightest promise of his jazz generation, both as a young steward of the bebop tradition and a savvy bridge to hip-hop and R&B. . . . A briskly assertive soloist with a tone that could evoke either burnished steel or a soft, golden glow, Hargrove was a galvanizing presence in jazz over the last 30 years. Dapper and slight of build, he exuded a sly, sparkling charisma onstage, whether he was holding court at a late-night jam session or performing in the grandest concert hall. His capacity for combustion and bravura was equaled by his commitment to lyricism, especially when finessing a ballad on flugelhorn.” We’ll thus hear Hargrove tracks both old and new -- as both a leader and a sideman, and in both a With Strings and an Afro-Cuban context, and so forth. Join us.

Also, please note that ATJ playlist info can be found here, at the bottom of the page...and that we (more or less) maintain a Facebook page for our show. Thanks.

Scott Gregory started working at Public Radio Tulsa in 2006; he started listening to public radio circa 1980, when he and NPR both marked their tenth birthdays (although only one of them commemorated the occasion with a party at Skate World). Scott became this radio station's Operations Director in the summer of 2023; he also hosts and programs All This Jazz, which airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5-1 from 9pm till midnight.
