Oklahoma Adds Nearly 1,100 New COVID Cases, Biggest Increase in 2 Weeks

The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported on Friday 1,077 new cases of COVID-19, pushing the state's total to 51,746.

Friday marked the largest one-day increase in cases since Aug. 5, when 1,101 were reported.

Tulsa County had 222 of Friday's cases, bringing its total to 12,095. It was Tulsa County's largest increase since 254 cases were reported Aug. 7. Oklahoma County continues to lead the state with 12,328 cases.

The state health department reported six deaths on Friday. None were in Tulsa County, but additional information about them was not immediately available.

COVID-19 has officially killed 715 Oklahomans since March 18. Since Monday, 54 deaths have been reported.

The state's seven-day average of new cases, which shows the trend in infections, climbed from 652 to 693. Wedenesday was the first time it dipped below 650 since July 14.

The seven-day average hit a peak of 1,093 on Aug. 1. When Oklahoma moved to phase three of Gov. Kevin Stitt's reopening plan on June 1, the average was 69 cases.

Tulsa County's seven-day average of new cases rose from 125 to 138.

As of Thursday evening, 562 Oklahomans were hospitalized for COVID-19, two fewer than on Wednesday. Of those hospitalized Thursday, 468 had positive coronavirus tests. Overall, 246 Oklahomans hospitalized for COVID-19 were in intensive care units, two fewer than on Wednesday.

Tulsa County reported 196 residents hospitalized as of Tuesday, down from a high of 199 on Sunday and Monday. Local hospitalization numbers change frequently based on new data. Tulsa County hospitalizations have been trending up overall since Aug. 1.

Over the course of the pandemic, 4,316 Oklahomans have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

The state reported 18% of its adult ICU beds available as of Thursday.

The state health department reported an additional 722 patients as recovered on Friday, bringing the total to 43,417. Patients are considered to have recovered if they did not die, are not currently hospitalized and it has been at least 14 days since their symptoms began. Symptoms have been reported to linger for several weeks for some individuals.

The state has 7,614 active cases of COVID-19, 349 more than the day before.

Tulsa County reported a total of 10,536 patients recovered as of Friday, an increase of 147 from the day before. The county has 1,436 active cases, 165 more than the day before.

The state's overall positive test rate on Thursday held steady at 7.3%. Out of 9,904 tests reported on Thursday, 9.3% were positive. Each positive test does not necessarily represent a unique individual.

The World Health Organization's benchmark indicating adequate testing is a 5% positive test rate.
