Performance Oklahoma - Tenor Jonathan Yarrington - Pianist Kate Stubbs

This week Performance Oklahoma presents the debut broadcast from the Musical Arts Series presented by Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant! This wonderful series enjoys the support of the Clark and Wanda Bass Foundation, the Ruth Seeger Piano Institute, The Red River Arts Council, the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. On Thursday, September 15th at 7:30pm the series marked the start of its 43rd season at the University's Fine Arts Recital Hall with guest tenor Jonathan Yarrington and the University's faculty collaborative pianist Kate Stubbs, the two presenting "Die Winterreise", the cycle of 24 songs filled with longing and loneliness; an extraordinary depiction of a winter’s journey written for voice and piano by Franz Schubert towards the end of his tragically short life. Conceived as a journey into the cold of winter, Die Winterreise is a musical setting of 24 poems selected from those published in 1823 and 1824 by German Romantic poet Wilhelm Müller and is the second of Schubert’s two song cycles on Müller’s poems. We’ll meet the new coordinator for the Musical Arts Series, Dr. Jeremy Blackwood, Dr. Stubbs will share her thoughts about performing the complete cycle and collaborating with Dr. Yarrington, and we'll hear Die Winterreise presented without interruption!

Following today's centerpiece program, Performance Oklahoma presents previews of four concerts to be featured in the coming weeks, excerpts from Classics 2 from the OKC Philharmonic, Italian cellist Francesco Mastromatteo in concert and in conversation from Oklahoma City University, the Brightmusic Chamber Ensemble's season opening "Russian Revelations" concert and Chamber Music in Oklahoma's season opening Founders Concert featuring the Ying Quartet!

This program airs Saturday, October 29, 8pm on Classical 88.7-HD1.
