A Spotlight on Miles Davis on the Next Installment of All This Jazz

Hello, and Happy Holidays, and here's hoping you can join us come Saturday the 27th at 10pm on Public Radio 89.5 KWGS-FM for All This Jazz...or else online via live stream at PublicRadioTulsa.org. (We'll also offer, per our happy custom, a 7pm re-broadcast on Sunday the 28th on Jazz 89.5-2, which is Public Radio Tulsa's all-jazz HD Radio channel.)

This edition of ATJ is a re-broadcast of a program from late May. At that time, our second-hour theme was Tunes by Miles Davis. The influence Miles exerts on this music -- on these musics -- that we label "jazz" is obvious, enormous, and all but inescapable. That influence is also, arguably -- in this age of omnipresent, genre-blurring crossover projects and increasingly sophisticated recording techniques and technologies -- now greater than ever before.

(Have you heard, btw, that Don Cheadle is directing and starring in a forthcoming biopic about Miles? It was shot last summer and is due out in 2015; it co-stars Ewan McGregor. The motion picture carried the earlier title of "Kill the Trumpet Player" and is currently known as "Miles Ahead.")

And in the first half of our next show, we'll hear excellent stuff from the likes of Emily Remler, Alvin Queen, and Hampton Hawes.

Do tune in, fellow jazz buffs! It's all to the good. It all sounds great. It's All This Jazz -- and you'll find the latest playlist data here.

(The fine print: ATJ spins modern jazz, both recent and classic, each and every Saturday night, from 10pm till midnight -- from Geri Allen to John Zorn, Louis Armstrong to Joe Zawinul. And the second half of our program invariably carries a theme. Also, please note: All This Jazz now has a Facebook page. Cheers.)

Scott Gregory started working at Public Radio Tulsa in 2006; he started listening to public radio circa 1980, when he and NPR both marked their tenth birthdays (although only one of them commemorated the occasion with a party at Skate World). Scott became this radio station's Operations Director in the summer of 2023; he also hosts and programs All This Jazz, which airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5-1 from 9pm till midnight.
