Transportation Commission Awards Contract for Major Project Involving I-44 and US 75

I-44 and U.S. 75 in Tulsa are officially in line for an overhaul.

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission awarded a construction contract for the replacement of five bridges and widening of I-44 from the western bank of the Arkansas River to Union Avenue.

"That contract is a major improvement at Interstate 44 and the U.S. 75 interchange in Tulsa. Contract is about a $90 million contract," said Oklahoma Secretary of Transportation Tim Gatz.

The contract was awarded to Sherwood Construction. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation previously secured a $45 million federal grant for the project, which will add a lane to I-44 in each direction in the work area.

A start date and project timelines will be announced in the coming weeks, but it is expected to take more than two years.

"It is going to be a significant construction project, and it will have a major impact on traffic. So,  we look forward to getting that project going. It addresses one of our oldest sections of interstate on Interstate 44 there west of the Arkansas River, built back in the 1950s," Gatz said.

ODOT’s long-term goal is to widen I-44 all the way to I-244. The I-44/U-S 75 project was included in the agency’s nearly $6.5 billion, eight-year construction plan approved in 2018.
