Trend in New Coronavirus Infections Continues Slide, But 11 More Oklahomans Dead from COVID-19

The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported on Thursday 705 new cases of COVID-19, pushing the state's total to 46,103.

Tulsa County had 101 of those cases. Its total is now 10,999, 149 fewer than Oklahoma County, which has the most in the state.

The state's seven-day average of new cases, which shows the trend in infections, dropped from 691 to 672, its lowest level since July 20. The seven-day average has fallen for three straight days and has generally declined since hitting a peak of 1,093 on Aug. 1. When Oklahoma moved to phase three of Gov. Kevin Stitt's reopening plan on June 1, the average was 69 cases.

Tulsa County's seven-day average of new cases dropped from 165 to 147, its lowest level since July 8.

The state health department reported 11 deaths Thursday, with two in the past 24 hours. An Oklahoma County man between 36 and 49 years old, and a Tulsa County woman between 50 and 64 years old died. The other nine people who died were 65 or older.

COVID-19 has now officially killed 638 Oklahomans.

A total of three Tulsa County residents were among the deaths reported Thursday. A total of 113 county residents have now died from the illness. Oklahoma County leads the state with 121 dead.

As of Wednesday evening, 600 Oklahomans were hospitalized for COVID-19, 81 more than reported Tuesday. Of those hospitalized Wednesday, 494 had positive coronavirus tests. Overall, 253 Oklahomans hospitalized for COVID-19 were in intensive care units, 37 more than the day before.

Tulsa County reported 176 residents hospitalized as of Tuesday, down from a new high of 181 on Sunday. Local hospitalization numbers change frequently based on new data. Tulsa County has had at least 164 residents hospitalized for COVID-19 since July 21.

Over the course of the pandemic, 3,901 Oklahomans have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

The state reported 20% of its adult ICU beds were available as of Wednesday.

The state health department reported an additional 667 patients as recovered on Thursday, bringing the total to 38,665. Patients are considered to have recovered if they did not die, are not currently hospitalized and it has been at least 14 days since their symptoms began. Symptoms have been reported to linger for several weeks for some individuals.

The state has 6,810 active cases of COVID-19, 27 more than the day before.

Tulsa County reported a total of 9,545 patients recovered as of Thursday, an increase of 143 from the day before. The county has 1,341 active cases, 45 fewer than the day before.

The state's overall positive test rate remained at 7.1%. Out of 9,347 tests reported on Wednesday, 9.4% were positive.

The World Health Organization's benchmark indicating adequate testing is a 5% positive test rate.
