Tulsa Police Shoot Man Blocks from Protest Outside Downtown Headquarters

Tulsa Police

Tulsa police shot a man Wednesday night blocks away from a peaceful protest against police brutality in front of police headquarters downtown.

Capt. Richard Meulenberg said officers near the protest heard gunshots and went to 11th Street and Boulder Avenue. Witnesses said they saw a shooting, and police found the victim, a man shot in the leg.

"He pointed at the person who shot him, who was still waving a gun at the time. Officers addressed that person and challenged him to put the gun down. He failed to put the gun down. We fired one round. We then took him into custody," Meulenberg said.

The alleged shooter was hit in the upper torso and was taken to the hospital, Meulenberg said. The victim also went to the hospital.

Meulenberg said the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic dispute.

No names have been released. Both men were white.
