The University and Free Speech

The University and Free Speech
A Panel Discussion moderated by TU President Gerard Clancy
March 8, 2018
Chapman Lecture Hall
7:00 p.m.

The issue of free speech at US colleges and universities has become highly explosive, especially in the last couple of years.  Critics from both the Right and the Left have singled out feminists, liberals, and civil rights groups in what they describe as the suppression of free speech, the stifling of intellectual rigor, and a pandering to oversensitive, narrow-minded students on college campuses.  Some have even connected this campus climate and the politically correct culture of liberalism and feminism to the success of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

In order to explore these issues, The University of Tulsa Women’s and Gender Studies Program and Public Radio Tulsa are hosting a panel discussion, moderated by TU President Gerard Clancy.  Panelists will debate the obligation of the university to promote a climate of robust and uninhibited exchange of diverse ideas while ensuring that all students are able to participate meaningfully in campus life without being subject to discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and violence.

Refreshments will be served in the Chapman Hall lobby beginning at 6:00 p.m. No registration is required but click herefor the Facebook event!

This event is free and open to the public.  For further information, please contact Diane Britton at britton@utulsa.edu or Meghann Ray at meghann-ray@publicmediatulsa.org or (918) 631-3117.
