University of Tulsa Extends Virtual Classes Through End of Semester

University of Tulsa

The University of Tulsa will offer only virtual classes for the rest of the semester.

Students who are away from campus for spring break have been told not to return. Starting Friday at 5 p.m., students will have only restricted access to dorms and campus apartments.

Administrators will work with students who need to retrieve belongings or need a waiver to stay in campus housing.

All TU employees have been told to work remotely, except for those needed to support minimal campus operations.

In an email to students and employees, Interim President Janet Levit said administrators made the decision after extensive discussions with TU's crisis management team and board of trustees, and measures are being taken with "profound regret" for the impact they'll have on students and families.

"It is clear, however, that steps like these are the most powerful tools we can employ to check the spread of this pandemic, prevent the overburdening of our health care system and allow us to resume our normal activities as quickly as possible. On a residential campus where students live and study in close quarters, social distancing is simply not possible," Levit said in the email. "Our decision is supported by guidance from public health officials and agencies and consistent with actions taken by other colleges and universities across the country."

TU officials will decide by April 1 how to hold spring commencement ceremonies. Remote work and leave policies will be introduced April 3.
