On the Valentine's Day Edition of ATJ: Jazz Greats Perform the Music of Sinatra

Tune in for the next installment of All This Jazz, right here on Public Radio 89.5 (KWGS-FM). Our show begins at 10pm on Saturday the 14th -- which is Val's Day, of course -- and it's also conveyed via live stream at PublicRadioTulsa.org.

For those unaware: ATJ airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5, from 10pm till midnight. We always thereafter offer a 7pm re-airing of the program the following Sunday evening, on Jazz 89.5-2, which is our station's all-jazz HD Radio channel.

Each and every week, we spin modern jazz, both recent and classic, across a range of styles -- from Mose Allison to Joe Zawinul, from Geri Allen to John Zorn. Plus, the second half of our two-hour show, beginning at 11pm, invariably carries a theme.

This time around, in both the style and spirit of the amorous holiday at hand, our theme will be The Music of Frank Sinatra. (And did you know, btw, that this year will deliver the Sinatra Centennial? He was born 12/12/15 -- in Hoboken, NJ, as everyone and his brother knows already -- and died in 1998.) Thus we'll hear jazz interpretations of such Frank-defined pop standards as "I'll Never Smile Again," "Night and Day," and "This Love of Mine" -- among several others -- as performed by the likes of Donald Byrd, Joe Lovano, Monty Alexander, and so on. And in the first part of our show, we'll dig tunes from Gary Burton, Donald Harrison, and Marc Copland.

Join us, jazz fans. All This Jazz is all for you.

PS: The latest playlist data for our radio show can be found here...and the ever-popular ATJ Facebook page is situated hereabouts. Gracias.

Scott Gregory started working at Public Radio Tulsa in 2006; he started listening to public radio circa 1980, when he and NPR both marked their tenth birthdays (although only one of them commemorated the occasion with a party at Skate World). Scott became this radio station's Operations Director in the summer of 2023; he also hosts and programs All This Jazz, which airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5-1 from 9pm till midnight.
