Selected Shorts on 89.5-1

Spellbinding short stories by established and emerging writers take on a new life when they are performed by stars of the stage and screen. Selected Shorts is a phenomenon. It begins with live readings of classic and contemporary short fiction at Symphony Space, an innovative performing arts center on Broadway on Manhattan's Upper West Side. These readings are recorded, as are those performed at other venues across the country, including the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Edith Wharton's home, The Mount in Lenox, MA, and the Westport Country Playhouse in CT.

The performers have included a long list of Broadway and Hollywood stars, from Meryl Streep and Morgan Freeman, to Cynthia Nixon, and Alec Baldwin. Longtime listeners confirm that there is something special about hearing a story read aloud, especially by carefully rehearsed actors. It may remind some of the joys of bedtimes stories, for other it evokes the ritual of hearing tales told around the national campfire that is public radio. Whatever the reason, you can expect to hear a constant stream of new and entertaining short fiction,  and a re-exploration of classics you may have read in college, but never really appreciated fully.
