Now at Gilcrease --- "Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey"

Our guest is Dr. Scott A. Shields, the associate director and chief curator at the Crocker Art Museum in California, who's also the chief curator for a traveling exhibit that will be on view at the Gilcrease Museum here in Tulsa through March 24th. "Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey" is a retrospective appreciation that features nearly 100 paintings and drawings, along with photographs, sculptures, and other objects from the artist's studio. As we learn on today's show, Payne (1883–1947) is widely seen as one of the most gifted of California's early plein air artists --- but he's also known and celebrated for the excellent work he created in the desert Southwest as well as the Swiss Alps and the waterways of France and Italy. Born in rural Missouri, Payne began his art career by painting signs, stage sets, and murals; his father was a carpenter. Payne considered himself self-taught --- his training lasted only two weeks at the Art Institute of Chicago --- and he always felt that nature was his best teacher. Payne ultimately settled in California; from there, traveled quite widely. You'll learn more about this remarkable show, and this very talented artist, at this link.
