On today's StudioTulsa, we learn about a new documentary film called "Misfits," which was screened last week at a special event at the Circle Cinema. This film, which was directed by the Danish filmmaker Jannik Splidsboel, and which debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, is (per its listing at the IMDB website) about "three American teenagers from conservative Tulsa [who] are struggling with isolation and instability.... This heartfelt coming-of-age [indie doc] portrays family bonds, poverty, survival, love, and the consequences of coming out as a young LGBT in the heart of the Bible Belt." The three young Tulsans profiled in this film are all participants in the locally based OpenArms Youth Project, a nonprofit that works to (per its website) "bring Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning youth and their friends together to build a peer-based community that empowers them to end isolation, create a progressive youth voice, increase well-being and self-esteem, and change the communities in which they live." Our guests on ST are Jannik Splidsboel, the aforesaid director of "Misfits," and Matthew Sumner, the OpenArms Board President.
