Why Technology Alone Can't Transform Education: MIT Teaching Systems' Justin Reich

Aired on Tuesday, September 29, 2020

While technology has profoundly disrupted virtually every sector of our economy, it hasn't had that large an impact on American education. Teachers are using more technology today, but the essential model hasn't changed that much, despite tech proponents argument that algorithim and peer-guided learning can transform the system.

At least that was the case until the pandemic. COVID-19 is providing a massive experiment in technological learning, as most American classrooms involve some form of distance technological learning. Justin Reich is a Professor of Compartive Media Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and director of MIT's Teaching Systems Lab. He is the host of the podcast TeachLab and has written about education and technology for Education Week, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic, and is the author of "Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Can't Transform Education."

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
