FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A bowl victory that increased Mississippi State’s win total this season to four and No. 22 Tulsa’s failed attempt to add another unlikely comeback to its impressive collection this season took a back seat to the melee that broke out Thursday shortly after the Armed Forces Bowl ended.

No. 22 Tulsa will wrap up its season next week in Fort Worth in the Armed Forces Bowl against Mississippi State.

The bowl game announcement came the day after the Golden Hurricane fell short in the American Athletic Conference championship. A 34-yard field goal as time expired gave the No. 8 Cincinnati Bearcats a 27–24 victory on a rainy Saturday night in Ohio.

Tulsa came from behind three times to tie things up, including a seven play, 80-yard drive ending with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Zach Smith to Juan Carlos Santana with 3:41 remaining.

No. 18 Tulsa won’t get a shot at No. 7 Cincinnati at home ahead of the American Athletic Conference championship.

This Saturday's game at Tulsa has been canceled because of positive COVID tests at Cincinnati. Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery said it’s a letdown.

"Two ranked teams playing at home in Tulsa. You know it’s going to be a big televised game. We get to highlight our university, our program, our city, all of that. You know, you lose that opportunity, that’s tough. That’s disheartening, I guess," Montgomery said Tuesday during a virtual news conference.

One week after becoming ranked for the first time in 10 years, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane moved up a spot to No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25.

TU knocked off Tulane at home Thursday night in a wild, overtime win that included their third-string quarterback throwing a 37-yard touchdown as time expired to tie things up and a 96-yard interception return for the winning score.

TU head coach Philip Montgomery said in a season affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the team can’t quite be as connected to the city as it would like to be.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 plans to play its football championship game Dec. 19 after previously listing that Saturday and the preceding one as tentative dates.

In late 2015, Zac Easter, a young man from a small town in Iowa, took his own life. The reason? According to the many journals and detailed writings that Zac left behind, this act of suicide was chosen by Zac because he was unable to continue his long-running battle against worsening traumatic brain injuries -- injuries that stemmed directly from the fact that Zac had been a football player, from third grade through high school.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — One week after its originally scheduled season opener was supposed to take place, No. 11 Oklahoma State will finally take the field this weekend.

After Tulsa had several players test positive for COVID-19 earlier in camp, the Golden Hurricane had requested an extra week of practice and, conveniently, both teams initially had a bye week Saturday, so it was an easy decision to move the game back a week. Kickoff is at noon Saturday.

The University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane is set to begin its football season Saturday in Stillwater. That game was delayed a week to give TU more practice time after a COVID-shortened preseason.

Now, Tulsa’s next opponent on the schedule has pushed back a game, seemingly because of the coronavirus.

Arkansas State’s home football game against Central Arkansas has been pushed back from Saturday to Oct. 10.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley confirmed after the No. 5 Sooners’ opening victory over Missouri State that the game Saturday night had been jeopardy of being postponed or canceled because of the Sooners’ COVID-19 cases.

The Big 12 has secured access to COVID-19 antigen testing that produces rapid results and will be used the day before competition on players, coaches and staff.

The conference announced a partnership with Virtual Care for Families. The testing program will use Quidel Rapid Antigen tests.

The Big 12 said it expects the Quidel test to provide results in about 15 minutes, the turnaround for its tests under a partnership with the Pac-12.

But he wouldn’t say during a Tuesday news conference how many cases the team is currently dealing with.
