"Aphrodite and the Gods of Love" at Philbrook

Our guest for this edition of ST is Tanya Paul, the Ruth G. Hardman Curator of European Art at the Philbrook Museum of Art here in Tulsa, who tells us about "Aphrodite and the Gods of Love." It's a terrific new show that will be on view at Philbrook through May 26th. As we can read of this exhibition at the Philbrook website: "Helen of Troy and Paris, Cupid and Psyche --- some of history’s greatest star-crossed lovers felt the influence of Aphrodite, one of the most powerful and revered Goddesses in the ancient world. Yet she was more than just the Goddess of Love. Known as the patroness of seafarers and warriors, many also thought she inspired political harmony, and was responsible for beauty in mortals. Given the breadth of her influence, it is not surprising that she was the subject of countless works of art. This exhibition of more than 120 exquisite sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, and other artifacts from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, spans more than 5,000 years of Ancient history."
