Oklahoma City, OK – AG: no second clemency hearing for Matthews
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) An Oklahoma death row inmate scheduled to die by lethal injection has asked the state Pardon and Parole Board for a second clemency hearing.
Thirty-eight-year-old Jeffrey David Matthews of Purcell is scheduled to be executed on Tuesday. He was sentenced to death for the Jan. 27, 1994, murder of Otis Earl Short during a robbery of Short's McClain County home. Matthews was the victim's great-nephew.
Matthews' first request for clemency was rejected by the board on May 26. But Gov. Brad Henry has twice granted a stay of execution to Matthews after defense attorneys asked for more time to review fingerprint evidence of other potential suspects in the case.
Attorney General Drew Edmondson's Office is formally opposing Matthews' request for a second clemency hearing.
