State, not federal charges in Okla. cross burning
SAPULPA, Okla. (AP) Prosecutors in Creek County will handle the case of two juveniles and an adult accused of burning a cross in front of a church in Sapulpa.
Federal prosecutors had considered pursuing the case as a hate crime.
The Creek County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Friday that the suspects and their parents have cooperated in the investigation.
The sheriff's office says the 18-year-old adult accused has admitted to investigators that he was involved in the June 23 incident at St.John's Baptist Church, which has a primarily black congregation.
Charges in the case have not yet been filed, pending a review by prosecutors in Creek County.
Investigators say wood from a water bed at a trailer park across the street from the church was used to make the cross.
