Tulsa, OK – Judge will not extend Rader Center consent decree

TULSA, Okla. (AP) A federal judge has refused the U.S. Department of Justice's request to extend a consent decree that settled a lawsuit over conditions at the now-closed L.E. Rader Center in Sand Springs.

The Tulsa World reports that U.S. District Judge Gregory Frizzell ruled yesterday closing the center and moving juvenile offenders to other facilities was anticipated at the time of the settlement.

The center was Oklahoma's only maximum-security lockup for juvenile offenders. State Office of Juvenile Affairs director Gene Christian announced on Aug. 1 that all juveniles had been moved to medium-security facilities in Tecumseh and Manitou.

The Justice Department filed a motion Sept. 1 asking that the consent decree that's to expire Sept. 30 be extended for three months to allow it to examine the moves.
