Prisoners to be Released

By A-P

Oklahoma City, OK – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) As many as 300 Oklahoma prison inmates could be turned loose early in less than a month.

A new state law going into effect Nov. 1 allows for some nonviolent offenders to be put on home monitoring early to relieve overcrowding.

Many prosecutors are unhappy, but House Speaker Kris Steele, R-Shawnee, says that the law allows the release of low-risk, mostly female inmates.

Steele says the intent is to concentrate resources on locking up violent offenders who are more of a threat to society.
