Oklahoma City, OK – Number of Okla. schools not meeting goals doubles

TULSA, Okla. (AP) The number of Oklahoma schools not meeting standards has grown to 227, about twice the number from a year ago.
The Tulsa World reports that another 61 districts are in need of improvement, up from nine last year.
State Education Superintendent Janet Barresi says she knew tougher standards would have an effect on how schools come out their evaluations. Barresi says the numbers are a reason to keep moving ahead with reforms.
The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires schools to make "adequate yearly progress" in reading and math test scores. The law also requires greater numbers of students taking standardized test and improved graduation rates.
