TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A Washington County jury has convicted a teenager on one count of plotting to kill students and teachers in a mass school shooting at Bartlesville High School while acquitting him on a second charge.
The jury in Bartlesville on Tuesday found 19-year-old Sammie Eaglebear Chavez guilty of planning to cause bodily harm while finding him not guilty of conspiring to perform an act of violence.
The jury recommended a 30 month prison term.
Chavez pleaded not guilty and testified in his own defense Tuesday that he was joking when he told classmates about how a school shooting could be committed at Bartlesville High School.
Chavez was arrested in December, hours before a gunman opened fire at a Connecticut elementary school and killed 20 children and six adults before killing himself.
