MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — Officials in Muskogee are seeking the public's help after thieves took eight batteries from school buses.

Muskogee Public Schools spokeswoman Wendy Burton says the theft occurred early Tuesday from a bus lot. Burton says each school bus has three batteries that weigh about 50 to 60 pounds apiece.

Burton tells the Muskogee Phoenix that the culprits tried to steal an ninth battery but it was dropped on the ground and left behind.

Burton says damage is estimated at $1,300 to $1,500. She says the thieves cut a hole in a fence to access the buses and that police are reviewing surveillance video in search of suspects.
