OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A New York-based reproductive rights group is asking the Oklahoma Supreme Court to block a law that would require abortion providers to have a physician with admitting privileges at a nearby hospital present when abortions are performed.
Oral presentations are scheduled before Supreme Court referee Daniel Karim on Friday. Karim will recommend a course of action to members of the state's highest court.
Attorneys for the Center for Reproductive Rights say Dr. Larry Burns of Norman has attempted without success to comply with the law set to go into effect on Saturday. They say the law could force Burns to shut down his practice, one of only three abortion clinics in Oklahoma.
Attorneys for the state say it has an interest in helping women who experience complications during an abortion.
