Plans to renovate Zink Dam are nearing final approval, but River Parks has some new work to do a few miles downstream.
Lots of rain has meant lots of water flowing in the Arkansas River, and that’s caused bank erosion on the east side around 58th Street.
"Probably, what we'll end up doing is something like we did about six years ago or seven years ago at 41st [Street] where there's a bunch of riprap," River Parks Director Matt Meyer said. "But the Corps of Engineers has approved methods of riverbank stabilization, so we'll need to use one of those. Right now, city engineering is looking at our options, then we'll have to figure out how much it costs and how to pay for it."
Though the erosion is getting near the park trail, Meyer said runners and walkers can still safely use it.
Meyer said building a series of low-water dams in the Arkansas River shouldn’t hasten bank erosion.
