Horace Silver, Charlie Haden, Kenny Wheeler, Joe Sample, Jimmy Scott, Gerald Wilson -- the jazz world lost several brilliant if not legendary practitioners last year. (And let's not forget, while we're at it, singer Jackie Cain, pianist Kenny Drew, Jr., or drummer Idris Muhammad [shown here].)
Therefore, on the next All This Jazz -- which kicks off at 10pm Central on Saturday the 24th on Public Radio 89.5 -- our second-hour theme will be In Memoriam: Jazz Greats Who Passed Away in 2014. We'll hear from all of those listed above (in the latter part of ATJ) in a special broadcast focused on both remembrance and celebration.
And also focused, of course, on excellent music throughout!
Please join us.
(The fine print: All This Jazz airs every Saturday night on Public Radio 89.5, from 10pm till midnight; the latest playlist data can be accessed here. We always thereafter offer a 7pm re-airing of ATJ on Sunday evening, on Jazz 89.5-2, which is our station's all-jazz HD Radio channel. Each week, we spin modern jazz, both recent and classic...from Geri Allen to John Zorn, Louis Armstrong to Denny Zeitlin. And the second half of our two-hour show, beginning at 11pm, invariably carries a theme of some sort. Lastly -- just FYI -- this program's Facebook page happily and ever so likably resides at this link. Come on in; the water's fine.)
