Tulsa, Oklahoma – TULSA, Okla. (AP) The city of Tulsa has filed a lawsuit against the state of Oklahoma, targeting a law passed earlier this year requiring cities to use the Oklahoma Tax Commission to collect sales taxes.
Records show that the four-count civil suit was filed Thursday in Oklahoma County District Court, and asks a judge to rule that the city has the right to use a private firm to collect its sales taxes.
The document is a constitutional challenge to House Bill 2359, which orders municipalities to use the Tax Commission for collection services.
Lawmakers passed the bill on the final day of this year's session, but before the governor signed it into law, Tulsa had signed a contract with an Alabama firm to handle the collections.
Tulsa's sales tax is 8.517 cents.
