Austin, TX – Xcel seeks OK to build Texas-Oklahoma power line

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Xcel Energy is seeking regulatory approval to build a $172 million high-voltage power line between the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma.

Southwestern Public Service Co. CEO Riley Hill says the proposed line is a critical piece of a long-term transmission improvement plan. Southwestern is a unit of Xcel.

The application filed Thursday with the Texas Public Utility Commission proposes a 200-mile line to help transport wind-generated electricity. The route would link a substation north of Lubbock to a new interchange in Beckham County, Okla.

Construction could begin by 2013, with power flowing the following year. Projections are for the line to transmit enough electricity to power about 375,000 homes.
