BRAGGS, Okla. (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin and donors formally dedicate the interfaith Thunderbird Chapel at an Oklahoma Army National Guard facility in Muskogee County.
The ceremony was Saturday morning at Camp Gruber near Braggs.
Fallin appealed to the public for help in raising funds to build a chapel at the training post, which hasn't had a site for religious gatherings since Camp Gruber was reactivated in 1977.
National Guard officials say the 10,000 square-foot Thunderbird Chapel features a sanctuary and facilities to accommodate services for about 200 people.
Construction of the facility was funded solely by private contributions.
Project organizers raised more than $1 million for the construction costs and hundreds of thousands of dollars in building materials and support were received in the form of in-kind donations.
